New Study Unveils Unique Terpenes in Colombian Cannabis
Recent research has uncovered that Colombia’s cannabis cultivation is characterized by a diverse range of chemical compounds, particularly uncommon terpenes.
The study highlights Colombia’s potential to emerge as a leader in global cannabis production, thanks to its varied environmental conditions that foster unique chemical expressions in the plants.
The study, conducted by researchers from universities in Colombia, Germany, and the U.S., analyzed 156 cannabis samples from 17 cultivation sites across seven provinces.
The findings suggest that Colombia’s unique environmental conditions, including its diverse landscapes ranging from tropical beaches to snow-covered mountains, contribute significantly to the phytochemical diversity of cannabis grown in the region.
Uncommon Terpenes and Cannabinoid Profiles
One of the key discoveries of the research is the significant presence of uncommon terpenes. The study divided the Colombian-grown cannabis into four chemotypes based on cannabinoid profiles:
- Type I (THC dominant)
- Type II (Balanced THC and CBD)
- Type III (CBD dominant)
- Type IV (CBG dominant)
Interestingly, certain regions displayed specific trends. For instance, plants from Colombia’s South Central and Amazon regions had notably higher levels of THC-A, while the Coffee Triangle region boasted the highest CBD-A concentrations.
Additionally, these regions produced higher levels of CBDV, THCV, and CBGA, showcasing the importance of geographical variations in cannabis cultivation.
Terpene Diversity: A Growing Advantage
The study highlighted a wide array of terpenes found in the cannabis samples, including not just common terpenes such as β-myrcene, but also rarer ones like nerolidol.
According to the researchers, the diversity in terpene profiles could enhance the plants’ natural defenses against pests and other pathogens, while also supporting more niche market applications in both medicinal and recreational cannabis industries.
The terpenes found in Colombian cannabis are also thought to contribute to the plant's unique properties, adding value to local strains. Notably, over 43% of the samples were from local varieties, while 48.7% were hybrids between local and imported cultivars.
This indicates that Colombia’s traditional cannabis strains are beginning to permeate the global legal market.
