CBD can improve memory function

Many scientific studies show that cannabis, which is the non-psychoactive component of the marijuana, has the ability to enhance the memory.

CBD – the cannabidiol – a bioactive part of the Cannabis plant is becoming popular for its potential benefits for the brain. It doesn’t involve anything related to getting high or causing short-term memory loss.

A study published in 2010 The British Journal of Psychiatry,in which the effects of CBD and TCH on acute memory were compared. This study revealed that TCH (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) – two main components of a Cannabis plant – have opposing effects on the brain of a human.

Difference between TCH and CBD

TCH is a psychoactive component of the plant, whereas, CBD counteracts its effect and protects one from getting high.

CBD is one of the active cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, but it comprises 40% of the total component.

In the brain, TCH and CBD target some of the same receptors – CB1 and CB2 – these receptors are involved in controlling the appetite, pain, memory, and mood.

When CBD is taken alone, it acts on the 5-HT1A receptor, which is the most widespread 5-HT receptor in the entire nervous system.

CBD acts upon 5-HT1A in the following system:

  • The Serotonin System –acts as an antidepressant, neuroprotective, and anti-anxiety
  • The Opioid System – reduces pain and the effects of chronic inflammation
  • The Dopamine System – regulates various aspects of behavior, including motivation and reward-seeking behavior

Effects of CBD on anxiety, stress, depression, and sleep

Various studies show that CBD contains an anxiolytic compound. This compound is helpful in relieving the characteristic symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.

It is believed that CBD influences the activity of neurons in the hippocampusregion of the brain, which is responsible for memory consolidation. It helps in this process by increasing the concentration of calcium in the mitochondria.

Studies also show that CBD affects the region of the brain which handles the various emotions of the human being.

CBD is also helpful in dealing with insomnia. It is found that the administration of CBD before the bedtime facilitates restful and deep sleep. CBD can be taken in form of CBD oil.

Effects of CBD on memory

Generally, people have a believe that marijuana or cannabis plant cause memory loss, this is not a complete truth. It, actually, depends on the type of cannabinoids a person is consuming.

One of the most common impairments for people who use cannabis is the short-term memory loss.But many studies show that this effect is due to the presence of TCH in the plant, which is the primary psychoactive element of the plant.

Some studies reveal that you can combat the effects of memory loss by using cannabidiol – CBD. The effects of this component are different on the cannabinoid receptors that TCH.

In fact, many scientific studies have already proven that CBD is a good choice for people who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Other studies show that CBD can be able to improve overall cognition.

According to a study that was published in the Frontiers in Pharmacology,the researchers found that CBD is helpful in promoting neurogenesis (the growth of neurons).

In a preclinical study of animals, which was conducted over a period of 3 weeks, some mice were injected with an induced Alzheimer’s disease and then given CBD doses daily. The given CBD, in this case, was found effective in reversing the cognitive deficit of the mice.

In another study, researchers found that an eight-month course with CBD helped in overcoming the development of social recognition memory deficit.

Researchers also discovered that the use of CBD can also reduce the brain damage caused by different traumas.

In an animal particular study, in which animal models with brain injury were involved, it was found that CBD increases the number of viable cells of the brain and helps in decreasing the number of injured cells of the brain by 50%.

Scientists believe that the neuroprotective effect of CBD is due to its action on the CB2 receptors. It acts on this particular receptor to produce the anti-inflammatory responses in the cells of the brain, hence, minimize the damage which could be caused by inflammation.

The process of oxidation also has an adverse effect on the brain, and it is responsible for the partial damage found in the conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies show that the action of CBD on the CB2 receptor reduces the oxidative damage.

Another study was held in Australia in which researchers found that CBD may be involved in improving the working memory of people suffering from schizophrenia. It also helps in improving the recognition power of such people.

During this study, scientists introduce mice to a rodent specific model of schizophrenia, and afterward, they were given CBD. This procedure helped in improving the working memory and recognition in the affected mice.

CBD as a neurogenesis stimulant

CBD is getting attention for its potential role in the aiding the process of neurogenesis. Scientists are paying more attention towards its role in Alzheimer’s disease.

In Alzheimer’s diseases, neural tissues are destructed rapidly, and this destruction leads to the debilitating neurological effect such as cognitive loss, memory loss, and severe changes in the personality.

In fact, this disease can transform a loving and caring person in a mean and selfish human being. CBD can slow the process of neurodegeneration as it stimulates the process of neurogenesis.

Scientists have been researching on the role of CBD in helping with the Alzheimer’s disease. It has not been proved yet that it could be used as a medicine for this particular disease solely, but scientists are hopeful on the basis of many evidenced they get from various studies on animals.

While the benefits of CBD look promising and gives a light of hope, its clinical application remains unknown.

A point to remember is that in clinical researches, a scientist can inject CBD directly into the brain of animals, whereas, this is not possible in case of humans. However, the findings of the animal research help generate knowledge which could be implemented in the researches for the benefit of mankind.
