We are aware of the popularity of CBD these days, however, the fame that CBD is achieving today is not unjustified. The benefits and advantages that CBD can provide easily justify its fame and popularity. Besides being famous for medicinal benefits, the use of CBD is also argued due to the reason that it comes from the cannabis plant. CBD is one of the compounds that is found and extracted from cannabis for medicinal purposes. There are also many other cannabinoids in cannabis including THC. THC and CBD are often confused because both have certain medical benefits but the reason that differentiates THC from CBD is the ability of THC to perceive psychoactive effects in a person. THC can alter the state of mind of a person and can result in making him high. This is the reason that making cannabis legal for medical purposes is argued but CBD is not a psychoactive compound, it does not affect a person’s thinking ability.
The world is in the struggle to make medical marijuana legal due to the benefits it provides. A large number of researches show that CBD can be helpful in dealing with a variety of diseases. CBD is used as receptors that when infused in the body reacts with the endocannabinoid system and assist the ECS to maintain health and regulate the immune system and contribute to the overall well-being of the body. In this way, CBD results in healing of chronic pain and inflammation, epilepsy, asthma, headaches, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, anxiety, stress and depression. It has also been studied that CBD can help be used as a precaution against certain types of cancer including skin cancer and breast cancer.
Breast cancer is one of the most prevailing cancers among women. Every 1 in 8 women is affected by breast cancer in the United States. It is recorded that every year 300,000 cases of breast cancer in women appear in the United States only. Early detection of the disease can be helpful in overcoming breast cancer and getting rid of it. Breast cancer develops as a result of tumorous cells that develop as a lump on the breast. The symptoms include appearing of a lump, pain in the armpits, change in the size or skin of the nipple, peeling or flaking of the skin of the nipple or breast. There are certain stages of breast cancer depending on the size of a tumour and how widely spread it is. Breast cancer diagnosed in the early stages can be healed and cured but once it has spread to different parts of the body it will be untreatable.
One of the important things to understand about breast cancer is that either the breast cancer is hormone receptor positive or negative, which means that either progesterone or estrogen hormones result in the growth of the cancerous cells or not. In the same way, it is also important to know that the breast cancer is HER2 positive or negative. HER2 is a type of protein that can impact the treatment of cancer. Breast cancer, if, diagnosed in early stages can be dealt with by chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. All the procedures depend on the condition and characteristics of the breast cancer.
It has been studied that CBD and cancer have some kind of interaction that may result in reducing cancer. Various studies were done in this specific area help in understanding the effects of CBD on cancerous cells. A study reported in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics found that metastatic breast cancer is affected positively by CBD. The CBD compound in cannabis help in inhibiting a gene namely Id-1 in a cancerous body that is responsible for spreading cancerous cells throughout the body. However, this study was not done on humans and the results need to be verified further. It was also found in a rodent study that downregulation of Id-1 receptor decreases the aggressiveness of cancer. CBD is also helpful in decreasing the Id-1 expansion without being toxic to normal cells. CBD results as a non-toxic agent that helps in down-regulation of Id-1 cells without affecting other cells.
Another research that was done in the laboratory and on mice tested the effects of CBD with triple negative breast cancer TNBC cells and found that CBD helps in reducing the growth, migration and spreading of aggressive breast cancer. This study suggests the use of CBD in breast cancer patients with TNBC cells as well as to produce anti-metastatic properties.
Another study reveals that CBD helps in apoptosis that is the death of cells that causes breast cancer. The reason that cancer spreads is that the normal functioning of the body that is responsible for maintaining the death of cancerous cells collapse and as a result the cells are met with huge growth. CBD has the ability to kill cancerous cells and result in apoptosis. This research was also conducted in the laboratory with no human subjects, the researcher calls for more research in this regard.
The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics includes a study that tests the anti-tumour properties of various cannabinoids including, cannabidiol, cannabichromene, cannabigerol, THC acid and cannabidiol acid and revealed that out of all these cannabinoids, CBD has the most potential to inhibit the growth of cancerous cells without affecting noncancerous cells. It was added that the data needs further testing of cannabidiol in the fight against the cancer.
It will not be wrong to say that CBD has certain effects on the cancerous tumour, but it is too early to conclude that. The major weak point of these researches and studies is that they are not conducted on humans and how CBD effects cancer in humans is still unpredictable. However, certain patients claim to witness the effectiveness of CBD on cancerous tumours but the laboratory testing is done on the cells or on animals. The results of these researches are still optimistic and satisfactory in understanding that CBD can be used against cancer. Detailed studies and researches should be done to conclusively define the benefits of CBD.
