The research on the use of cannabis for PTSD was first conducted by Dr Sue Sisley at a large scale. Unfortunately, in 2014 she was fired from her post at the University of Arizona when her study on cannabis for the relief of PTSD symptoms became a political issue. However, her study was authentic and reliable this is the reason who was once again hired. She is now serving as the principal investigator for a multi-site study which is sponsored by Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. The company funded $2.1 million to continue the research in this field.
The first controlled clinical trial in the world for the evaluation of the benefits of smoked medical cannabis for relieving PTSD is an outpatient, triple-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled study. There are 76 veterans participating in the study and they have been randomly assigned with the strains of THC and CBD to find the effectiveness of both strains. The study is in its third year and it is proceeding well. However, the suicides happening because of PTSD are rapidly increasing among veterans. It is important to find an effective solution to the problem and cannabis is showing effective results.
Experts are confused that whether THC or CBD will be a better option because both compounds are extracted from cannabis. No doubt that effects of THC so far has been beneficial in the fight against PTSD. However, a common issue is that THC has psychotic effects. That is why overdose of THC can lead to some serious side effects.
On the other hand, the research on CBD is not very clear. The reason is that there are various biochemical procedures that are initiated by the intake of CBD. This is why it gives a wide range of results. It has been found that CBD can effectively help against some types of epilepsy and various other mental health problems. However, the scientists are still unable to find out how CBD can help against various mental health issues. CBD acts by targeting and increasing the release 5 HT1A signals for serotonin receptors that act on brain cells and reduce anxiety and stress.
Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter which helps in the regulation of mood. It is linked with the feeling of satisfaction and happiness. There are powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in CBD that leads to the production of GABA which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It can produce calming effects.
However, still, hopes are high that the study conducted by the experts will show how cannabis can help in the case of PTSD and how it is more effective as compared to various other drugs that are being used. The experts are also conducting studies on the dosage of cannabis that should be used in cases of PTSD to assure that there will be no side effects of the consumption plan.
