Cannabis Ruderalis

Cannabis Ruderalis

You must have the knowledge that cannabis is a plant and you have heard of the most common strains of cannabis that are indica and sativa. Another strain of cannabis is ruderalis, which we do not commonly hear of. The botanists have contradictory opinions in referring cannabis ruderalis as a spate strain or a sub-species. However, there is a great deal of difference between ruderalis and the other two strains of cannabis. The detailed information provided in this article will help you in gaining knowledge about ruderalis which can assist you in planting or farming the plant if that is what you looking for.

The origins of Cannabis Ruderalis

The word ruderalis comes from a Latin word ruderal which means wild plant. A ruderal plant is the one which can grow and cultivate easily even in the areas where there is human inhabitation or the areas which have been affected by natural disturbances. The ruderal species are first on the land after the disturbances like ecological recovery squad. The disturbances can range from wildfires to avalanches.

Ruderalis species are thought to be descendent from indica species which are the descendants of sativa species, so it is argued that whether it is the subspecies or the distinct species in itself. It is believed that ruderalis comes from indica genetics that managed to grow in extreme conditions like harsh climates and short tenure of growing season in the northern areas where it originates. The ruderalis plant belongs to the areas of Asia, Eastern/Central Europe and most importantly Russia. Botanists used the term ruderalis to define its quality to be cultivated as a wild plant and without human intervention, adapting to the extreme environmental conditions.

Characteristics of Cannabis Ruderalis

The reasons due to which the cannabis strains are classified and differ from each other are hidden in their properties. The size, growing time, morphology and flowering time are the characteristics of the strains that distinguish them.

Size of the ruderalis

Cannabis ruderalis is the shortest type of cannabis strain, which only blooms to about 30 cm to 80 cm in height when it is fully grown. They have a rugged and shaggy pattern that grows only a few branches with wide and fat-bladed leaves which are in a light green hue. The buds that grow from ruderalis are small but chunky and have thick sturdy stems. Because they are smallest in size, so ruderalis are also called dwarf or bonsai cannabis.

The growth time of Cannabis Ruderalis

This characteristic of ruderalis set it apart from other strains of cannabis. the flowering cycle of ruderalis is witnessed according to the maturity of ruderalis instead of the photoperiod. The recent ruderalis can produce flowers in approximately 20 to 30 days after the seeds are planted regardless of the cycle of light. It has the quality to complete its cycle from being a seed to providing seeds in nearly 10 weeks. The seeds of ruderalis can easily detach itself and can also survive in the ground unless the conditions are favourable to continue production. They can also continue to grow even if their shells are cracked because of the human or animal walking on the seeds. This is the factor due to which they are called auto-flowering strains. These strains are often produced because of this trait that they produce flowers as they age, without the need for vegetation. This trait has led to the inventions of various genetically modified strains of cannabis.

The cannabinoid concentration

The concentrations of the cannabinoid THC found in ruderalis is relatively lower than other strains. Due to this factor, ruderalis is not considered preferable for recreational use. However, it has high concentrations of CBD which make ruderalis a better option to cultivate for medicinal utilization. The CBD content, short growth cycle, and auto-flowering properties of ruderalis are what makes it more valuable to cannabis breeders.

Auto-flowering

Auto-flowering is the ability of the plant to grow and reproduce according to the changes in the plant itself rather than the environment. Usually, plants depend on the changes of season and climate in order to cultivate, while this is not the case in the auto-flowering ability of ruderalis. This is the most important trait of ruderalis that differentiate it from other strains. The ruderalis strain growth is dependent on its maturity and it continues to produce flowers until they complete their reproduction cycle.

The ruderalis strains do not need light to grow and do not depend on light cycle exposure, unlike indica and sativa strains. Due to this factor, breeders modified these genes into the blooming cycles of other strains as a result of which more effective, prolific and popular strains are produced.

The auto flowering plants are now produced and have evolved the process of hybridization and cultivation. This property of ruderalis allows the growers to be careless in cultivation because of the forgiving requirement of light and also provide shorter sow and harvest period. Due to this, it is considered very popular for home cultivation by beginner growers and has created a boom in the cannabis world.

Some of the famous automatic flowering strains of cannabis are Amnesia Haze Automatic which is short in size as well as in growth tenure and grows in about 10 weeks. This version of Amnesia Haze is one of the sativa favourites. Royal Haze Automatic is also popular because of its short growth time, small size and easy to cultivate properties. Royal Bluematic is the strain that provides sweet smell and taste of Blueberry, this strain is ready to harvest in 8 to 10 weeks. Northern Light Automatic is the most famous and popular strain and provides a sweet taste and relaxing high. This strain has reached heights of popularity because of the short harvest period and gigantic yields.

The cannabis ruderalis is extensively used by the cannabis growers in order to get benefitted from its quality and produce some extraordinary strains in terms of flavour, content and cultivating characteristics. This has contributed in developing various strains of cannabis.
