We use CBD oil for our 8-year-old furbaby, a dog called Gibbs. It works very well when he feels restless. We noticed the difference when we ran out, and since he got it again, everyday life has become much better for him and for us.

Read on Trustpilot (opens in a new window)I am very pleased with using the CBD oils and have just started my 3 year old dog on the Pet CBD as well. Worked perfectly!

Read on Trustpilot (opens in a new window)We use both the CBD oil for humans and dogs. I have a very reactive dog that had a very tough start to life before we adopted him. He was in one way or another different stages of fear or anxiety. I use the human cbd for myself so I started my Blu boy on the dog formula and we both have reduced our anxiety which makes walks and life in general more relaxing

University of Bologna
Dog research at the University of Bologna
Formula Swiss has funded research on cats and horses at the University of Bologna. Professor Roberto Chiocchetti's team has also mapped cannabinoid receptors in dog tissue. The two dog studies were tissue studies and did not test any product.

Tissue research
Cannabinoid receptors in the dog's digestive tract (opens in a new window)
Researchers mapped cannabinoid receptors throughout the gut. They did not test CBD treatment.
- What they did
- Researchers examined digestive tissue from dogs under the microscope.
- What happened
- Cannabinoid receptors were spread throughout the gut: in its lining, immune cells, blood vessels and muscle.
- Good to know
- A tissue study. It suggests where CBD could act in digestion, not that it treats a condition.

Tissue research
Cannabinoid receptors in the nerves that carry pain signals (opens in a new window)
Pain-sensing nerves contained cannabinoid receptors. This was tissue research, not a test of pain relief.
- What they did
- Researchers studied nerve clusters beside the spine, which pass pain and touch signals, in tissue from eight dogs.
- What happened
- The nerves that carry pain signals had cannabinoid receptors, which could let CBD influence pain signalling.
- Good to know
- A tissue study. It shows where CBD may act, not that it relieves pain.

CBD oil for dogs with arthritis (opens in a new window)
Owners and vets reported less arthritis pain and more activity during CBD treatment.
- What they did
- Dogs with arthritis received CBD oil for four weeks and a dummy oil for four weeks, in random order.
- What happened
- While taking CBD, dogs had less pain and were more active, according to both owners and vets.
- Good to know
- No side effects were noticed by owners, but one liver value (ALP) rose in blood tests.
Gamble et al. · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2018

Positive result
Daily CBD for arthritis pain in dogs (opens in a new window)
Pain and mobility improved with some CBD doses and formulations over four weeks.
- What they did
- Twenty dogs with arthritis received one of several daily CBD doses or a dummy oil for four weeks.
- What happened
- CBD reduced pain and improved mobility, and higher doses worked better.
- Good to know
- Blood tests showed no harmful effects over the four weeks. Results depended on the dose and form of CBD.
Verrico et al. · Pain · 2020
-
Positive result
CBD added to usual arthritis treatment (opens in a new window)
Owners reported improvements when CBD was added to their dogs' usual arthritis medicines.
- What they did
- Twenty-one dogs with arthritis kept their usual pain medicines; nine of them also received CBD oil.
- What happened
- Owners of dogs that also had CBD reported less pain and a better quality of life within a week.
- Good to know
- Owners rated the results, and all dogs also took other painkillers.
Brioschi et al. · Animals · 2020

Partly positive
CBD for dogs with mobility problems (opens in a new window)
Owners and vets saw improvements, but measured walking and activity did not change.
- What they did
- Forty-two dogs with mobility problems received CBD oil and a dummy oil for 45 days each, in random order.
- What happened
- Owners and vets saw some improvement while dogs were taking CBD.
- Good to know
- Measured walking and activity did not change. Liver values rose more when CBD was combined with anti-inflammatory painkillers.

Positive result
CBD- and CBDA-rich hemp oil for hard-to-control epilepsy (opens in a new window)
CBD and CBDA oil reduced seizures in a small trial of dogs with hard-to-control epilepsy.
- What they did
- Fourteen dogs with hard-to-control epilepsy received a hemp oil rich in CBD and CBDA and a dummy oil for 12 weeks each.
- What happened
- Seizures fell from an average of 8 to 5, and 6 of the 14 dogs had at least half as many seizures, compared with none on the dummy oil.
- Good to know
- A small study. Some dogs were sleepy or briefly unsteady, and one liver value rose slightly.
Garcia et al. · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2022
-
Partly positive
CBD for dogs whose epilepsy medicine isn't enough (opens in a new window)
The higher CBD dose reduced seizures alongside existing medicine, but few dogs had their seizures halved.
- What they did
- Fifty-one dogs whose seizures weren't controlled by medicine received CBD oil and a dummy oil for three months each.
- What happened
- On the higher dose, dogs had fewer seizures and about a quarter fewer days with seizures.
- Good to know
- Few dogs saw their seizures halved. Some lost appetite or vomited, and liver values rose.
Rozental et al. · Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine · 2023
-
Partly positive
CBD alongside epilepsy medicine (opens in a new window)
Seizure frequency fell with CBD, but the proportion of dogs with seizures halved was similar to placebo.
- What they did
- Dogs with hard-to-control epilepsy kept their usual medicine and also received CBD oil or a dummy oil for 12 weeks.
- What happened
- Dogs given CBD had a third fewer seizures (median), and fewer seizures went with higher CBD levels in the blood.
- Good to know
- About as many dogs saw their seizures halved as on the dummy oil. Two dogs became unsteady and one liver value rose.
McGrath et al. · Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association · 2019
Stress

-
Positive result
A single dose of CBD when left alone or travelling by car (opens in a new window)
A single CBD dose reduced some, but not all, signs of stress during separation or car travel.
- What they did
- Dogs received one dose of THC-free CBD or a dummy treatment before being left alone or taken on a short car journey.
- What happened
- Some signs of stress, measured in behaviour and the body, were lower in dogs given CBD.
- Good to know
- The effect differed between measures and between the two situations.
Hunt et al. · Frontiers in Veterinary Science · 2023
-
Positive result
Daily CBD for six months and car travel (opens in a new window)
Daily CBD reduced some signs of travel stress, with results varying between journeys.
- What they did
- Nineteen dogs received THC-free CBD or a dummy treatment daily for six months and took repeated short car journeys.
- What happened
- Dogs given CBD had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and whined and licked their lips less.
- Good to know
- The effect differed between measures and between journeys.

Itchy skin
1 study
-
Partly positive
CBD and CBDA oil for itchy skin allergies (opens in a new window)
Owners reported less itching with CBD and CBDA oil, but skin sores did not improve.
- What they did
- Thirty-two dogs with itchy skin allergies received a CBD and CBDA oil or a dummy oil for four weeks, alongside their usual treatment.
- What happened
- Owners of dogs given the oil saw less itching after two and four weeks.
- Good to know
- Skin sores did not improve, and one liver value rose in 4 of 17 treated dogs.
